You think you’re set but there are some helpful tips that will help make your stay in the beautiful Dominican Republic more fun, with less hassle and safe.

For money, it’s our recommendation that you try to convert some money from dollars into DR pesos before you come to the island. If you’re short for some reason, use the currency exchange service at your hotel. And instead of using cash, use a credit card that does not charge extra for foreign transactions. If you stay at an all inclusive hotel, you really don’t have to worry about cash or credit that much. You should bring about $20-50 worth of $1 bills. You’ll want to tip people to show your appreciation and for better service.

Once you get to your hotel, talk to the concierge or tour representative as soon as possible. You’ll want to know everything that is available to you early in your stay so you can plan accordingly.

In your hotel, most of the staff is likely to speak English well but if you take an excursion outside of the hotel and outside of an tour, you’re likely to encounter people who don’t. It’s best to attempt to speak Spanish but if you don’t know much, just as simple questions. Don’t be tempted to ‘sweeten’ your requests as you would if you were asking for something from another English speaker. Keep it simple and they will more likely be able to understand you.

To save money and time, bring with you suntan location, bug spray, anti-itch cream and other medication you anticipate you may need. These things are available in local stores and likely your hotel but they will be much more expensive and they may not have the brands you prefer.

Stick with bottled water. If you can, even brush your teeth with bottled water and don’t open your mouth in the shower. Your hotel will most likely have clean water but it’s better to be safe than sorry. At restaurants, avoiding water will be more difficult. You can ask for no ice with your drinks but your food will be made or cleaned with water. You need to have faith that the water is clean, it’s too hard to avoid.
