Swedish Design

Today we went to the art museum, Kontsmuseet and the Swedish design museum, Röhsska museet. They’re really great, even if most of the stuff is written in Swedish–but at least it’s free if you’re under 25 like me! This was also the museum where a Matisse painting was stolen, Sweden really doesn’t have much luck with keeping their art–come on guys, get it together. Just kidding, seriously, don’t kick me out of your country or anything.

Konstmuseet
Kontsmuseet had a lot of things like crafts and sculptures besides paintings and the like, there were also some revolving exhibits which were really interesting too. I really like the historical Scandinavian paintings dating back to 1400. Some of the sculptures outside of the museum were really beautiful, you don’t really see that kind of stuff in America, unless you go to really old parts of bigger cities that haven’t been ravaged by war or weather.

Röhsska was great, as someone who considers themselves a sucker for good design, I was not disappointed. This was one of my favorite museums thus far, I was so lucky as to be here while a Vivienne Westwood exhibition was taking place. There were so many great pieces of fashion there, I just about died. There was also a thing for John Galliano’s coats, which is cool, even though John Galliano is pretty much shunned in the fashion community.

There was a really cute kids exhibit too, called Peek-a-Boo, where the designers wanted to really have fun with the child’s sense of play. Some of the toys were so adorable, there was an apple that children could climb into, and strangely textured pieces that you could stick your arm through. I love this museum, it was so much more fun and exciting than the others, and it was really thought provoking while being interesting at the same time with all the Swedish design.
