Beers to Drink in Rio de Janeiro
You might be surprised to learn that Brazil is the fourth largest market for beer in the world. When you are visiting Rio de Janeiro be sure to expand your horizons and try some of the microbrews that the city has to offer. The majority of the beer brewed in Brazil is of the Pilsener variety. I’m usually not a huge fan of pilsner but nothing sounds more satisfying than a nice light beer to relax with in the city. Here are some of the popular brews and the more high ends drinks the city has to offer.
Brahma:
This is basically the Budweiser of Brazil as it is now owned by Anheuser-Busch after InBev purchased the company. The standard Brahma is a pale lager that has alcohol content on 4.3%. The Brazilian brewery was founded in 1888 and became national in 1914. Brahma is a solid beer for relaxing and watching a match.
Bohemia:
This can be found in most large liquor stores in the United States and is one of my favorite light imported beers. Also owned by InBev Bohemia is a light German pilsner with a mild flavor. I’ve had this on few occasions and it’s a beer that won’t fill you up or make you feel bloated.
Eisenbahn Brewery:
Eisenbahn is one of Brazil’s larger microbreweries and they offer a variety of ales and lagers. Much like the other breweries in Brazil Eisenbahn specializes in German style brews such as their own Pilsen, Dunkel, and Kolsch style ale. Eisenbahn is some great beer that doesn’t taste like alcohol water.
Baden Baden Brewery
Recognized as the first microbrewery in Brazil Baden Baden breaks the mold of the traditional German beers other Brazilian breweries offer. Baden Baden offers beer styles from all around the world including an Irish Dry Stout, an American Blonde Ale, and an English Barley Wine. This is the brewery to check out if you and your buddies are beer snobs.
