With the summer months approaching and the population praying that the good weather will hold, now is the perfect time to start considering what events you will be wanting to attend in the capital. The city comes to life during the long evenings of summer and with such a wide variety of entertainment and activities on offer there is bound to be something to suit everyone. Here are seven of the activities or events happening in the capital this summer that you simply cannot miss:
Shakespeare’s Globe Theatre:
Due to its open ceiling, the Globe is only really an active theatre during the summer when there is (supposedly) less of a chance for rain. The theatre is a replica of the theatres that Shakespeare’s plays would have originally been performed in during his lifetime and it is worth a visit if you’re looking for something cultural to do this summer.
Wimbledon:
Whether you’re in it for the world class tennis or for the strawberries and cream, Wimbledon is a staple event in the London summertime. Held in South West London, it is easily accessed from central London by train. The tournament will be held from Monday 29th June to Sunday 12th July.
Premier League Darts Tournament
If you fancy travelling further afield for your sporting fix, the Premier League Darts tournament another British staple, is being held in Cardiff this year. Cardiff is often overshadowed by London and yet there are so many brilliant places to visit there. Be sure to visit the castle if you do pop over to Wales!
Audrey Hepburn: Portraits of an Icon:
Audrey Hepburn continues to be a much-loved cultural icon, and this summer an exhibition at the National Portrait London charts her career through the beautiful photographs that have been taken of the star. It is open all summer, opening on July 2nd and closing on 18th October.
Outdoor Cinema Events:
You will have to keep your fingers crossed that the rain stays away for the open air film screenings happening across the capital this summer. There are lots of venues hosting special evening screenings, all you need to do is pack a blanket and a bottle of wine to have a fantastic evening under the stars.
Buckingham Palace Summer Opening:
Whilst for the most of the year, Buckingham Palace remains closed for tourists and visitors it comes alive during summer as it is transformed into a top tourist attraction. The state rooms are open to visitors whilst the Royal Family are away on their summer holidays. Be sure to keep an eye out for a Rembrandt painting or two as you wander around the palace!
