South Dakota is home to the Black Hills and many terrific cities. Deadwood is located in the heart of the Black Hills and is a town full of history. It was known as a rowdy mining camp back in 1876. Today, the city is listed on the National Register of Historic Places and today’s main street is full of restaurants, shops and even casinos.
Back in the day, Wild Bill Hickok was killed in Deadwood and Calamity Jane is buried at the cemetery in town. Mount Moriah Cemetery is the final resting place of some historic figures. Not only is Calamity Jane buried here, but also so is the murderer of Wild Bill. The cemetery is actually known to be the place where a lot of murderers are buried.
The Main Street is located in downtown Deadwood and is a historic street that still resembles the 1800s. It is a big place for gambling and visitors can choose from over 80 different casinos. Deadwood started off as a mining town and Broken Boot Gold Mine offers visitors an underground tour. The mine tour takes guests on a path of old ore cars and through tunnels while learning mining techniques and how to pan for gold.
Old Style Saloon #10 is a bar and museum where Wild Bill Hickok was playing poker when he was murdered. The saloon puts on reenactments of the murder during the summer months. It is a great place to walk around and gamble a little. The best time to visit Deadwood would have to be in the summer. It gets pretty cold during the winter months and they see a lot of snow. If you want to be able to walk around the historic town located in the Black Hills, you will want to plan a vacation during the summer months.
