If you are like me then you are always looking for the freshest eats in whatever city you are visiting for a vacation or for business. Whenever I travel for business and I know that I am going to be in a city for an extended period of time I make sure to rent out a casita or a townhouse that has a kitchen or kitchenette so I can cook some fine local ingredients for myself instead of heading to a bistro for every meal. In Paris I visted the Marche D’Aligre, Rue Montorgueil, Le Marche des Enfants Rouges, Rue Cler Market Street, Marche President Wilson, and The Marche Bastille
One of the places that I spent the most time visiting open food markets was Paris. Here are some of my favorite open air food markets. This post concerns Marche D’Aligre one of my favorites.
The Marche D’Aligre
The most locally authentic market. The Marche D’aligre is open until 1 p.m. every day except for Monday. The market has fresh produce as well as delicious meats and cheeses that can satiate any palate. From delicious poultry to incredible charcuterie, one of my favorite meals to eat in France.
The Marche D’Aligre is conveniently located behind the Bastille between the Rue du Faubourg Saint-Antoine and the Rue de Charenton. This is one of the more lively and personable markets around and they are much kinder to tourists. It does help if you speak a little bit of french.
Here is a convenient guide to learning different terms that you will use a standard Parisian market. Some of my favorite things to pick up while in the market are the raw duck and the little piglets that they have inside of the various shops. Additionally, you can get some of the best fresh pasta that I have found in France it is a lot different than the traditonal pasta you find in Italian markets.
